On the 14th December 1895, at Carolina Port, Dundee FC played Clyde. The team wore black armbands in memory of a former teammate, Harry Jackson, who had drowned after the steamer Principia sank on the 21st November. Harry had played several times for the “A” team.
Harry Jackson had recently completed his apprenticeship as a draughtsman with Messrs Gourlay Bros. & Co., and had made the decision to start a new life in America. He had obtained job in Chicago, where he had family. His brother was manager of Camperdown Shipyard
The Principia left Dundee bound for New York, about 140 miles into the journey there was an explosion on-board, followed by a ferocious fire. The crew tried to make it back to the Scottish coastline but were unsuccessful, the steamer finally sank near the Faroe Islands. Local people tried to rescue the crew and Harry, who was the only passenger, but the only survivor was able seaman W. Anders.
