Dundee’s propensity for being drawn against difficult European opponents continued when they were drawn against Real Zaragoza in the 64-65 Cup Winners’ Cup. The Spanish side were embarking upon a golden era and were known as Los Magnificos in Spain. They were consistently in the top five of La Liga in the 1960s and twice winners of the Copa Del Rey. They boasted a star studded line up at a time when Spain’s big two had Di Stefano and Luis Suarez. By the time they met Dundee they were also the holders of the Fairs Cup. Dundee, not boasting the same strength as the title winning side a couple of years earlier, did well to go toe-to-toe with the Aragonese side. This tie was effectively a last 16 match, so a kinder draw might have seen the Dark Blues embark upon another lengthy European run.
